Electrifying Energy
Smart GB Services provides specialist advisory services to organisations operating in the UK electricity distribution sector. Our focus is on the regulatory, strategic, and commercial challenges created by the transition to a decarbonised, decentralised energy system.
The UK’s electricity networks are undergoing fundamental change. The rapid growth of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and distributed generation is placing unprecedented demands on distribution infrastructure that was never designed for two-way power flows. As the sector moves towards the RIIO-ED3 price control period, distribution network operators and their supply chains face critical decisions about investment, innovation, and the use of data to manage increasingly complex networks.
Roger Hey CEng has spent over 30 years working at the heart of these issues. As co-founder of the Energy Geeks policy think tank, current UK Chair of CIRED (the International Conference on Electricity Distribution Networks), and Chair of the Voltage Matters Forum, he brings a combination of technical depth, regulatory access, and industry relationships that is difficult to replicate. He also contributes to the IET’s work on voltage management policy.
What we do
We advise energy technology companies, supply chain businesses, and startups on regulatory affairs and go-to-market strategy, helping them understand how distribution network operators buy, what drives regulatory incentives, and how to position their products within the evolving policy landscape. We have particular experience working with companies operating at the grid edge and behind the meter, including smart EV charging, solar inverters, and home energy management.
We support major consultancies as a specialist subcontractor on projects requiring deep expertise in grid telecommunications, voltage management, and critical national infrastructure.
We contribute to innovation programmes funded through Ofgem’s Network Innovation Allowance and Strategic Innovation Fund mechanisms, providing strategic management, regulatory framework design, and stakeholder engagement.
We also play an active role in shaping the policy environment through our involvement with Energy Geeks, the IET, and the Voltage Matters Forum, publishing regularly in Utility Week and contributing to industry consultations on behalf of the sector.
Who we work with
We work with distribution network operators, energy technology vendors, startups entering the sector, supply chain companies, systems integrators, and tier-one consultancies. Our clients typically need specialist knowledge that sits at the intersection of technical understanding, regulatory insight, and commercial awareness, delivered by someone with established credibility and relationships across the sector.
